The Georgia Department of Transportation will begin an emergency project this week to replace failing bridge joints on I-20 at Sweetwater Creek and at the Chattahoochee River west of Atlanta.
“We have been patching the potholes created by these damaged joints several times a week,” said DOT Area Engineer Michael Hill. “I’m pleased that we will be getting them permanently repaired.”
The $5.1 million project will replace the bridge joints and includes deck rehabilitation as well. All work on the project will occur at night and on the weekends, and the contractor is required to keep two lanes open at all times.
Single lane closures will be in place each night at 9 p.m. through Thursday, and all lanes will be reopened by 5 a.m. each day. Weekend hours are 9 p.m. Friday continuously through 5 a.m. Monday.
The contractor will work in the eastbound direction at both locations on weekends throughout the month of September. They will then move to the westbound side, at Sweetwater Creek only, on weekends for the month of October. In November, the bridge joints should be repaired, and the deck work will begin at both locations in both directions. This work will primarily occur on weekends as well. The overall project completion date is April 30, 2011.
“I-20 will be usable during the project but we are expecting some heavy delays at times,” said Hill. “The main thing to remember is to give yourself extra time to reach your destination.”
